Porcelain, Gold Leaf
Main Corridor, Whipps Cross Hospital
Drawing inspiration from natural forms, artist Valeria Nascimento has created several specially commissioned porcelain and gold leaf artworks for Barts Health Trust, which are displayed down the corridor of Whipps Cross Hospital from Junction 2 to 6.
Known for her restrained use of colour in elegant, graceful sculptures that seem to hover weightlessly, these artworks feature a cluster of paper-thin porcelain petals scattered across the surface, or neatly arranged in a tidy circle. Nascimento wishes to take the viewer on a journey through botanical and peaceful landscapes.
Born in Brazil in 1962, Nascimento earned a degree in architecture before turning to clay which now forms the basic material of her art practice. She has exhibited around the world and recent solo exhibitions include ‘Rewilding’ Gallery Scene Ouverte (Paris), ‘Bloom’ Heather Gaudio Fine Art (Connecticut) and ‘Flora’ Woolff Gallery (London).
