For Anderson’s first permanent public art commission in the UK, he has developed an epic new painting for the Renal Department depicting a tranquil beach. Flitting between abstraction and figuration and rendered in a reduced palette, the painting conveys a scene that could be a tropical Caribbean paradise, but is in fact the rather more prosaic beauty of the Margate seaside much loved by JM Turner.

About the artist
Hurvin Anderson’s (b.1965, Birmingham, England) vibrant paintings draw on the genres of still-life, landscape and portraiture to explore the way community and identity can be represented. Born in Birmingham to Jamaican parents, Anderson’s practice touches upon his Jamaican heritage as well as referencing wider art history.
He has received international recognition as one of the more significant painters of his generation. Anderson has had solo exhibitions at Tate Modern; Studio Museum Harlem, NY; the Dulwich Picture Gallery; Michael Werner Gallery, NY and David Risley Gallery, Copenhagen. He has also been in included in group shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Saatchi Gallery; Le Plateau, Paris; Arnolfini, Bristol; Chapter Gallery, Cardiff as well as many other international venues. In 2017 the artist received a nomination for the Turner Prize. His works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London.
