Barts Billboard: Lothar Götz
Artist Lothar Götz was commissioned to create a new billboard work for St Bartholomew’s Hospital. The piece, was on display in June 2007 and takes its inspiration from the patterns and colours found on traditional Korean Pojagi wrapping cloths for gifts and presents of food. The billboard was located in the south eastern corner of Barts’ historic square, the screen wrapped around the space between the old and the new buildings being constructed.
The artwork was a condition of the town planning permission for the new hospital, which will provide 21st-century facilities for the Trust’s flagship cancer and cardiac services, but also continues a long tradion of publc art at Barts, whose North Wing is home to original paintings by 18th-century artist William Hogarth.
Götz produced a painting of the work for dispay in the hospital following the completion of the building programme.
