This print is based on Boontje’s vibrant design installed throughout a paediatric ward at the Royal London Hospital which features green flora and fauna punctuated by vibrant three dimensional elements of neon orange and frosted pink. Alluding to renewal and growth, this print is dominated by energising shades of green and features a rhino mum and baby sporting Boontje’s signature cut out design. This print is unique to our collection; it displays a 3-dimensional element, as the artist has appliquéd acrylic resin and beads on to the canvas to create depth and added interest.
Tord Boontje was born in The Netherlands in 1968. He attended Eindhoven Design Academy and graduated from the Royal College of Art London in 1994, where he later became Head of Design Products from 2009 – 2013. He set up Studio Tord Boontje in 1994. By 2002 his Garland light for Habitat was a widely recognised and distributed product while his Blossom chandelier for Swarovski was also gaining popularity. Yet it was an installation created in the Moroso showroom during the 2004 Milan Salon that attracted the most attention. Titled Happy Ever After was full of texture, colour and imagery — a sensorial experience that demonstrated that design can be joined with emotion.
In 2005, a high profile project with the American retail giant, Target, saw Tord on US television in his own advert surrounded by animated animals and nature, and in 2007 Rizzoli publishers dedicated a book to the first 10 years of Studio Tord Boontje. Since 2005, Tord Boontje has worked with a range of international companies such as Shiseido, Yamaha, Hewlett Packard, Bisazza, Target, Philips, Kvadrat, Alexander McQueen, Perrier-Jouët, Nanimarquina, Artecnica, Authentics, Meta and has continued his work with Swarovski, Moroso, and Habitat. His work can be found in major collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, MoMA and Copper-Hewitt museum in New York, the Design Museum and Tate Modern in London.
