The everyday world provides a continuing source of fascination for Leo Fitzmaurice. Packaging, leaflets, advertising and promotional flyers form the material of his playful works. This new edition by Fitzmaurice sees the ubiquitous supermarket flyer given a celestial spin as he frames a detail of a boiled egg, or isolates a slice of lime or draws our focus to the unmistakable three colours of a pervasive logo. The artist creates humour by unleashing the potential poetry latent within the ephemera that fills our lives.
Fitzmaurice transforms the seemingly mundane into humourous and lyrical objects, such as a series of playful sculptures he made for Barts. Closer inspection reveals that these are actually toothpaste packages from which he has removed all the writing – or has “detexted”, as he puts it. Other material he has used include discarded cigarette packets which he adapted to resemble mini football shirts, fizzy drink cans, plastic carrier bags, and paint chip samples.
In 2004 Leo Fitzmaurice was invited by the British Council to take part in the Artist Links residency at Vitamin Creative Space, Guangzhou, China. In 2011 he was awarded the prestigious Northern Art Prize. Since then he has shown work at MOT International; Seventeen Gallery; Tanya Leighton Galley, Berlin; and Dodge NY; Drawing Room, London. Solo projects have be hosted by Rogoland Kunstsenter, Norway; Grundy Gallery, Blackpool; New Art Gallery Walsall; Angel Row, Nottingham; Firstsite, Colchester; Collective Gallery, Edinburgh; Lowry Gallery, Salford. His work has been reviewed in The Guardian, The Observer, The Independent, Vogue Italia, Frieze, Time Out, Harpers and Queen, Blueprint, Art Monthly, Flux, Art Review, Circa, Art World among others. Fitzmaurice’s work is in the Arts Council Collection of England, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Manchester Art Gallery, The Locus Plus Archive, Harwood House, Manchester Art Gallery, and numerous private collections. Fitzmaurice frequently serves as a visiting lecturer, teaching at Central St. Martins, University of Brighton, Leeds Metropolitan University, UWE and Bristol among many others.
